On the 14th of October 2012 Constable Judie came over to room 24 on the senior side to tell us about a happy, serious and extremely important subject called DARE. DARE, is about drugs, peer pressure, making right choices and more. If any adults are reading you most likely would of done this before at primary school which I am currently at. I have I am most likely going to post some of the work that I have done. This project (DARE) is a great progress, it shall go on for another three weeks. Dear Abby...
I am one of the servants in the Montague family. My job is to send messages to Lord Montage's son Romeo. About a week ago I unfortunate had to tell him some unfortunate news, I found out that his beautiful wife Juliet had sadly passed away. When I told him his this he left. He was gone for about four days, he eventually returned, although he was and still is extremely depressed. He has now been drinking, getting up to mischief and worst, starting up fights with the Capulets. I am ever so worried, he keeps saying that he wants to go down to where they put Juliet after the funeral to discover the truth but all I think that will do will make him even more depressed! I can not stand him being like this, I want the old Romeo back, I am worried sick please Abby what ever can I do?
Dear Montague messenger...
I have read your message and I fell so deeply sorry for Romeo’s loss. As a matter of fact I too once had a husband who passed away and for the first couple of months he was gone, I felt like the most depressed person in the world. But when I got to about two months of him gone I just learnt to suck it up and move on because it is just simply life! It’s just how the world works unfortunately. So, this is what I think you should do: Tell him thats it ok and people just have to more on, read my advice and tell him all of it and tell him the most of the time you will find someone new and unique and make another great life. Romeo killing himself over it is just the worst thing he could ever do.

Romeo
Romeo Montague is a very charming, peaceful, caring, quick witted
16 year old teen. He is appealing to all kinds of women (especially Juliet.) He has a smile to die for with a beautiful and delicate personality.
Personally I think that Romeo isn’t the best looking guy in Verona but he does have some good looks. From his silky brown hair down to his stocky chest build, Then to the legs hidden inside those skinny old tights of his.
Romeo’s social life over the past couple of weeks has gone severely downhill. Recently he hasn’t been going to any parties, and has been abandoning all of his friends because his lovesick brain wont stop thinking about this extremely annoying Capulite called Juliet. Will he ever realize we don’t care much for Juliet? Normally, all Romeo does in his spare time is walk around chat to friends about the Capulites and Juliet. Juliet, Juliet, Juliet, will he ever stop! Then he goes home and moans about something else to do will not being able to see her. But all in all I won’t lie he is still a very good friend. He sticks up for others, searches for peace and tries to find the good in everyone he has ever met.
Romeo being the son of lord Montague is really living the dream. I mean being one of the richest men in Veriona must have its perks since he lives in a fancy castle with over one hundred servants at his feet must feel extraordinary. But I find it strange how he is the son of the great lord Montague because he is nothing like him at all. This particular teenager has so much but all he really wants and needs is his lust for Juliet to be satisfied and to me Mequisheo his best friend it seems almost amazing how obsessed.
In conclusion Romeo is a great guy. Almost always happy, is a charm to the ladies and has a good thought and opinion on literally anything and everything! So I think if you are a women who’s looking for someone to love. That absolutely certain you can sweep this young man off his feet and away from this Juliet. He would not let you down.

The Carbon Cycle
Carbon can be found anywhere and in all living matter. It is in plants, animals and humans. It is a natural Cycle and without it everyone in the world would die. Carbon is always on the move.
As well as in living things Carbon is found in the atmosphere though the gas Carbon Dioxide and is dissolved in water such as oceans and rivers, it is also found on rocks, shells and in fossil flues. All of the movements of where Carbon is found make up the Carbon Cycle.
Plants and trees release oxygen into the atmosphere though Photosynthesis, they store carbon as they grow. Realizing Carbon Dioxide and carbon. Animals and humans also give out carbon dioxide when they breathe. If dead animals and plants equalities faster than it is decomposed, some of it can be compacted and turned into fossil flues such as oil, gas and coal. These flues took millions of years to create naturally!
Dead plants can also float down rivers which is one way carbon gets from the land to the ocean. Right now carbon is in Photosynthesis, respiration, compaction, transportation and decomposition. Now over to the sea.
Carbon moves both ways between the ocean surface and the atmosphere, ocean plants use all of the dissolved Carbon on the water for photosynthesis and they store it just like the plants on the land! Then the ocean plants eats these plants, leading the Carbon to get transferred again. Ocean plants and animals release this carbon dioxide through Respiration. Some ocean animals use the Carbon in the ocean to even make there shells and when they die there Carbon used shells dissolve or settle onto the ocean floor, when ocean plants and animals die, they decompose in the water. Which all helps contribute to the Carbon Cycle. Lastly water moving between the different layers of the ocean also carries Carbon. Next Human Impact.
First, we all know that Carbon has been increasing rapidly in the last century dude to climate change, this is due to human activity especially because of fossil fuels and deforestation. So when we cut down and burn trees they unfortunately can’t soak out anymore carbon and when we burn fossil fuels even more carbon is released into the atmosphere to run cars, more electricity, make goods and run goods which is all used in our daily lives and increases climate change.
In conclusion we all use Carbon for electricity, manufacture goods and fossil fuels. We all use carbon in our everyday life's but everybody should do there bit and cut down on these things to help safe our planet because the Carbon Cycle is extremely important for everything living that absorbs oxygen it is created by nature and it has been going for millions and millions of years. It is on land and sea and is one of natures amazing, great and important events!

Every Friday Room 22 go over to Room 5 for Buddy time. By buddy is 6 and he is called Jack. He has a very bright, happy and bright personality. Jack is very good at: sport, net handwriting and drawing.
I enjoy Buddy time because it is good to get out of work for half an hour and spend some time with Jack. My favourite part of Buddy time is when Mrs. Allen read to room 5 and 22 because it takes me back to when I was young and six years old!

WHAT CAUSES THUNDER AND LIGHTNING?
Thunder is caused by Lightning. depending on the nature of the lightning and distance of the listener, thunder can range from a sharp, loud crack to a long, low rumble. The sudden increase in pressure and temperature from lightning makes very fast expansion from the air surrounding and within a bolt of lightning.
This expansion of air creates a “sonic shock wave” which produces the sound of thunder; often known as a clap, crack. The distance of lightning can be decided by the the person hearing the thunder and lightning based on to the time when the lightning is seen, to when the sound is heard! Thunder and lightning can go on for days it can travel for kilometers!
Thunder firstly occurs from strong: winds, rain, and hail. Thunder and lightning doesn’t stay in one place at a time, the clouds keep up with the wind current. Sometimes thunder occurs before rain or hail even starts! They can occur inside warm, moist air masses. The clouds form thunder storms but sometimes clouds form a thunderstorm without them raining or hailing because they are already moist enough to begin one.
Thunder and lightning is very dangerous. lightning can strike and kill you and also start fires. Lightning can hurt anyone and kill anyone in just seconds. Like the time when a wave of thunderstorms and wind blew near the south of America last year, killing at least 16 people. Thunder and lightning is very dangerous and is something that must be avoided because it can lead to death. So keep an eye out for lightning striking houses and buildings etc! There has been a history of terrible events caused by thunder and lightning killing people and destroying things.
So in conclusion thunder and lightning is pretty amazing. It is caused by nature and bad weather and is to be avoided at all costs because it is very deadly and dangerous.

How to get the results for "Does music help you memorize"
Equipment needed:
1.Headphones
2. Ipod
3. Modern music
4. Classical music
5. Numbers printed on cardboard in a line
6. Paper with box to write the numbers in, persons name, age, sex and a box to tick for permission to tell results to other people.
7. Stop watch
Instructions...
1. I am going to give a person doing the experiment 2 types of music to listen to (classical and modern) while they are having numbers shown in front of them.
2. Person puts on headphones
3. I (Louis) will press button on iPod to start the music
4. I will lay down a set list of 25 numbers mounted on cardboard in front of them
5. First type of music to test them on will be Classical music, then modern music, then no music
6. I will start stopwatch
7. I will wait for 10 seconds
8. After ten seconds I will take away the numbers and continue to play the music while they write down as many numbers in order as they can remember on the piece of
paper provided
10. I will see how well the person did by giving 3 points for what they did best, 2 points for what the did second best and 1 point on what they did worst.
11. Then they will fully full out the sheet given to them and will give the sheet to me when done. Then move on to the next person!
12. At the end of the experiment I will add the scores together and find out my results!
Planning my fair test...
Planning my fair test...
To ensure I conduct a fair test I am going to keep these things the same:
1. Same number sequence for each type of music no music will stay the same
2. The timing will stay the same
4. The music will stay the same
5. The working sheet will stay the same
6. The three categories will stay the same
The one factor that I am going to change is the person taking the experiment.
Science Questions
1. Why do we listen to music? = Music means
so much to so many people. For some it is a way to escape from reality and
raise someone’s expectation’s in life, for some people music comes to them from
the heart, some people listen to music because it’s something meaningful to
them, for some it brings flashbacks of there life. Which could help them
memorize?
2. Why are there differences with modern
and classical music? = The reason why
there are differences with modern and classical music is because they are all
created in very different time periods. For instance 100’s and 100’s of years
ago when people played and made music none of it used electricity, which meant
no electric guitars, electric keyboards or synth. But these days there is all
of that. Music fits around the changes of humanity.
3. How does memory happen \ how do we use
our brain to memorize? = When you hear, see, touch and taste something it comes
in from the outside world and into your brain.
Some of the things are so unimportant they only manage to stay in your
short-term memory system for up to 5 seconds! Some things that are important
but only need to be remembered for a short time get stored into your short-term
memory. But when it comes to things that are really important and need to be
remembered for a very long period of time, end up being sorted into your
long-term memory part of your brain and this is when it gets pretty amazing
everything you forget you will never EVER end up fully forgetting. For instance
a friend one time hung out with another friend. Them hanging out wasn’t so
important so they forgot about it. But then someone filmed it and they showed
it to the two friends who hung out that time. There is no way they will ever
forget it. It will reboot the scene of them hanging back into there brain.
The hippocampus has the big
job of transferring information between short-term and long-term memory.
4.How does the brain work? = The brain is
made up of tiny brain cells called neurons. Everyone has up to 100 billion of
them! All neurons have a cell body called a Nucleus Dendrites that look like
little fingers. They fire out electrical charges. For instance, when you first
learned to walk the neurons try to connect and eventually connect and then
never EVER unconnect. That’s why you never ever forget to walk!
5. Who invented numbers? = Numbers or symbols used for counting have existed since man
learned to count! Archeologists and historians estimate that numbers were first
used around 32,000 years ago. They also say that there is no actual person that
invented numbers but they know that numbers first originated from the by the ancient Mayans, Egyptians, Arabs and Greeks.
6. When discovered
the brain? = Back in BC when the first human got
smashed in the head with a large blunt object!
7. What is the memory capacity of the
human brain? = The brain’s exact storage
capacity for memories is difficult to calculate. Because First, we do not know
how to measure the size of a memory. Second, certain memories involve more
details and thus take up more space; other memories are forgotten and thus free
up space. Additionally, some information is just not worth remembering in the
first place.
8. What are the differences between modern
and classical music? = The biggest difference is variety! At the beginning of
last century is when everything took off! Like: Auto tune, synth, radio, more
experimental music, bigger variety
of instruments and genres.
9. When does the brain start to loose
memory? = The brain begins to lose sharpness of
memory and powers of reasoning and understanding not from 60 as previously
thought, but from as early as 45, scientists say.
10. Where in the brain are your
memories stored? = Scientists assume
that our memories are stored somewhere inside our cranium. The common belief is
that they are stored in our brain cells, which can be stimulated and retrieved.
MY HYPOTHESIS
My hypothesis is
that the people doing the experiment, which is, “does music help you memorize”
will do the best without music because it will be a lot less distracting which
will make it easier. In my opinion modern music will do the worst, because it
is the most distracting, loud and chaotic.
Why I am doing my science project
The reason why I am doing my science project on “Does music help you memorize” is because during my original project “Does music improve your fitness level” I was still deeply interested in music and memory so I decided to change it to “Does music help you memorize.” This is because it sounds a lot more interesting and fun in my opinion.

Young Leaders Day 2012
On the 28th of May some year 7 and 8’s from Muritai school went into the Michael Fowler Centre in Wellington for the Young Leaders Days 2012. Young Leaders day was an amazing experience, it had 5 people telling us amazing things and stories on how to find that quality and potential in your life and more! It was funny, amazing, shocking and sad; they really got the messages that the speakers were telling us through quite cleverly!
Speaker 1 Nick Tuitase - “Good leaders know how to spark potential.”
Speaker 2 Jamie Fitzgerald - “ Never let performance get in the way of safety.”
Speaker 3 Cassandra Treadwell - “Believe in yourself and others will too!”
Speaker 4 Cam Calkoen - “Dream big and achieve more!”
Speaker 5 Dave Atkinson - “Stick up for whats right, choose good friends, live for others.”
In my opinion Dave Atkinson was the best, because he was very funny and truly soulful with what he was telling us. He told us some amazing stuff about choosing the right things with other stuff as well like peer pressure. In addition he was so funny everyone kept saying that he should be a comedian! I loved his quote which was “Stick up for whats right, choose good friends, live for others.”
To be a good leader you need a lot of things but I think especially the fact that you need to believe in yourself! Because you can’t really do anything truly amazing, great, fascinating etc.without faith!
If I knew that I couldn’t fail with whatever I did I would become the best musician I could be, I know I'm already on that road but It’s something that I am desperately wanting my future to become because without it I’m not really the person that I am! Music is my natural talent!
